Yes, there are some seriously unhealthy fats (hydrogenated fats = toxin) created by the food industry to increase profits. However the 'fat scare' tactics that have been adopted by many have created an environment where people are getting less and less of the good fats in their diet. Basically all fats are being tarnished with the same brush.
This is bad news from a health perspective as 'healthy fats' are responsible for a large number of important functions in your body including........
- Optimum Brain Function
- Cell Membrane Function
- Nervous System Function
- Reducing Inflammation
- Immune System Function
- Slowing Digestion
- Sex Hormone Production
- Powerful Fuel Source
Udo's Oil
This great oil blend as been specifically designed to contain the ideal ratio of Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids. Udo's Oil contains an organic blend of flax, sesame and sunflower seed oils, combined with oils from evening primrose, rice germ, oat germ and coconut. I normally have a tablespoon in the morning and in the evening. Alternatively I will put a spoonful into my super smoothies!
Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil has been used for generations as a powerful super food. I use coconut oil in my smoothies or to fry food (since it remains stable at very high temperatures). Here is a great article which fully highlights the amazing health benefits of this great fat source.
Avocado
Avocado's find their way into most of my salads. A great source of polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats not to mention their powerful vitamin E content.
Organic Almond Butter
If I am in need of an energy kick a quick spoonful of almond butter normally does the trick. Packed with energy and good fats this certainly beats guzzling a chocolate bar or knocking back a chemical-laden energy drink.
Olive Oil
Another healthy fat source that finds its way onto all my salads. Make sure you go for the extra virgin variety and preferably organic.
This is by no means a definitive list, there are other great sources of healthy fats but these are probably my favorite. If you are not getting enough healthy fats into your diet then the above list is a great place to get started.
